METRO AG Group Headquarters again awarded BREEAM certificate

During the remodelling of the METRO headquarters in 2019, special attention was paid to the use of natural building materials. As a result, the building on Schlüterstraße received the BREEAM certification "Excellent". The BREEAM In-Use certificate is one of the most important instruments for assessing sustainable commercial construction in Europe.

Similar to motor vehicles, building seals must also be renewed at regular intervals. In mid-2022, METRO PPROPERTIES – METRO's real estate company – decided to have the building's high standards re-certified and even went one step further. In addition to the evaluation of the structural implementation and its technical installations, the operating processes were now also certified. To provide a sufficient data basis, the energy data of at least 12 months after the initial certification had to be collected and evaluated, among other things. The energy reduction at the METRO Campus is achieved in particular through the comprehensive conversion to LED lighting with motion sensors. In addition, further assessment criteria are used, such as water consumption, waste reduction or health and well-being as indoor and outdoor aspects.

In particular, the aspects of operating energy and CO2 reduction fit in with the goals of the climate partnership with the city of Düsseldorf, according to which the state capital aims to achieve climate neutrality by 2035. For the corporate headquarter in Düsseldorf, the goal is to make the METRO Campus climate-neutral as early as 2025.
